6 Comedic Murder Mysteries For a Lighthearted Read

As a reader, I’ve always been drawn to a mystery—I’m that reader who will stay up much too late to learn who done it—and I also love books that make me laugh out loud. So a book that combines both of these? Even better than chocolate + peanut butter! And I don’t believe I’m alone. Popular TV shows like Only Murders in the Building and The After-Party combine the two beautifully, and there’s a surge of humorous mystery novels on shelves now. So when I came up with the idea for The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club, the first book in the Hu Done It mystery series (named after protagonist Kathryn Hu), I wrote with the hope of keeping the pages turning as well as giving the readers some laughs. And the premise lent itself to this perfectly.
When three women discover they’re dating the same man, they band together to get revenge…only to discover his body. With motive and a crime scene covered in their DNA, they must now solve his murder before they go down for it. But as they start digging into their ex’s life, they realize that everyone in it had a reason to want him dead. The shenanigans and jokes practically wrote themselves. At every turn, I asked myself, What’s the funniest way to reveal this next piece of information? Which is why Kathryn thinks she’s about to be proposed to, but instead stumbles in, half-naked, on her boyfriend proposing to another woman. I had so much fun writing this book, and I hope that comes across!
Here is a list (in no particular order) of some of my favorite humorous mysteries that made me laugh so hard I almost forgot about the murder.

The body in the closet was going to be a problem. Kathryn Hu knew it. Yes, Tucker Jones was a cheating scumbag, and yes, she’d agreed to meet Olivia and Elle–Tucker’s other girlfriends–to exact revenge for all he’d put them through… But then they found him. Dead.
Do they look guilty? Yes.
Do they feel guilty for having wished him dead just hours before? Maybe a little.
But–solid motive and a crime scene covered in their DNA aside–they’re innocent. They swear.
To clear their names, Kat, Olivia, and Elle team up to find the real killer. But as they go undercover and lie to everyone, including the hot detective working the case, they realize that every person in their ex’s life had a reason to want him dead. Will they uncover the truth before they go down for a murder they didn’t commit?
