5 of the Best Female-Centered Thrillers

One of the things I really like to do in my fiction is to take traditionally male action-thriller tropes and put a female or emotional spin on them. In my newest novel, Famous Last Words, I play out a hostage negotiation, but (I hope) not as you’ve seen it before. Rather than show the shoot-out and the explosions, I show it from a woman’s perspective: what happens when a man takes three hostages? What if that man is your husband, and you have no idea how and why he’s doing it? And – the most interesting part to me – what happens afterwards, once the siege is over, the guns set down, the bodies taken away? For me, so much of writing as a woman is in the aftermath of criminals acts, and below are five of my favourite thrillers that explore female themes in similar ways.
